# High-Pass vs Low-Pass Filters in Logic Pro

**A high-pass filter removes low frequencies and lets higher frequencies continue. A low-pass filter removes high frequencies and lets lower frequencies continue.** In mixing language, **high-pass** and **low cut** mean the same direction; **low-pass** and **high cut** mean the opposite direction.

Use either filter only when you can name what should disappear. A high-pass filter can clear mic rumble without touching the useful body of a part. A low-pass filter can tame hiss or remove bright spill without flattening the tone. And if the sound is already doing its job? Leaving the filter off is a valid setting.

## High-pass vs low-pass: the quick answer

The name tells you what passes, while the alternate name tells you what gets cut. That’s why a high-pass filter is a low cut. Nothing about the words tells you the correct cutoff frequency for a vocal, guitar or bass. You still have to listen to the source.

## Where the high-pass and low-pass filters are in Logic Pro

Open **EQ → Channel EQ** on the track, bus or output you want to change. Apple’s current [Channel EQ overview](https://support.apple.com/guide/logicpro/channel-eq-overview-lgcef1edce5b/mac) describes an eight-band EQ with both filter types, shelves, four parametric bands and a real-time Analyzer.

- **Band 1, at the far left:** high-pass filter. Click its button to turn it on.

Drag the active edge horizontally to move the cutoff. Drag the filter line vertically to change slope. The parameter fields below the graph let you enter exact values when repeatability matters.

## Cutoff, slope and Q change different things

### Cutoff frequency: where attenuation begins

Cutoff is the boundary control. It isn’t a brick wall. A high-pass filter set near the bottom of a vocal’s useful range starts rolling away material below that point. A low-pass filter near the upper edge of a dark effect return starts rolling away material above it. The exact amount removed at nearby frequencies comes down to slope and filter shape.

### Slope: how quickly the filter rolls off

Slope is measured in decibels per octave. A gentle slope reaches farther into the passband but changes it gradually. A steep slope protects more of the passband until closer to cutoff, then removes the stopband more aggressively. Neither is automatically more transparent.

Start gentler when the filter is correcting a musical source. Move steeper when a narrow boundary must reject obvious noise or spill. Compare in the mix; the steeper curve can sound more abrupt even when the Analyzer looks tidy.

### Q or resonance: what happens around cutoff

On Channel EQ’s edge filters, Q changes the shape around cutoff and can create a bump near the boundary. Apple notes that Q has no effect on bands 1 and 8 when slope is set to **6 dB/oct**. At other slopes, a higher Q can make the cutoff audible before the unwanted range is fully removed.

That small peak may restore perceived weight or add character. It can just as easily exaggerate a note, consonant or cymbal edge. Bypass the filter and level-match before you decide the resonant version is better.

## A seven-step filter workflow that avoids guessing

1. **Name the problem.** Rumble, plosive energy, hiss, cymbal spill and deliberate muffling require different decisions.
2. **Play a representative section.** Include the lowest note, brightest attack or loudest phrase that the part must keep.
3. **Turn on the correct edge filter.** High-pass for unwanted lows; low-pass for unwanted highs.
4. **Use a moderate slope first.** Move the cutoff until the unwanted material becomes quieter.
5. **Back away when the useful sound changes.** Restore the body, air, pick attack or room cue that tells you the filter has gone too far.
6. **Check in the full mix.** Solo exposes noise; context tells you whether that noise matters and whether the part still supports the song.
7. **Compare bypassed at matched loudness.** A louder version often wins even when its tone is worse.

The Analyzer can confirm where energy exists, especially below what small speakers reproduce. What it can’t do is decide which energy belongs to the performance. Switch between Pre and Post to see what the filter changes, then make the final call by ear.

## When a high-pass filter helps

- **Vocal or speech:** remove air-conditioning rumble, floor vibration, stand movement or low plosive residue below the voice you need.
- **Acoustic or electric guitar:** reduce handling noise, footfall or cabinet lows that do not contribute to the arrangement.
- **Overheads and room microphones:** control kick leakage or room pressure when it conflicts with close mics, while preserving the intended kit weight.
- **Reverb and delay returns:** keep low-frequency wash from masking kick and bass. Filter the aux return rather than changing the dry track when the effect alone is the problem.
- **Bass or kick:** remove true subsonic movement below the part, but stop before the fundamental and useful weight thin out.

There’s no defensible “high-pass every non-bass track” rule. A piano, guitar, pad or room mic may carry low information that makes the arrangement feel connected. Filter it away because the spectrum looks busy and you can end up with ten individually clean tracks adding up to one weak mix.

## When a low-pass filter helps

- **Noisy recordings:** reduce hiss above the useful brightness of the source when denoising would do more damage.
- **Amp and distortion layers:** trim fizzy top end that fights cymbals or vocal consonants.
- **Synths and samples:** darken a layer so another part owns the attack and air.
- **Reverb and delay returns:** keep bright repeats or tails behind the dry signal.
- **Sound design:** automate cutoff to create a muffled-to-open transition or the reverse.

A low-pass filter can’t distinguish unpleasant fizz from useful presence when they overlap. If the source turns dull before the problem disappears, use a bell cut, dynamic EQ, de-esser, different amp tone or source edit instead.

## Use starting areas, not fixed presets

Numbers printed in presets or tutorials can locate a search area. They can’t hear the singer, microphone, tuning, arrangement, sample rate or chosen slope in your session. Sweep until you hear the boundary, then back off.

## Using high-pass and low-pass together

Activating both filters leaves a band of frequencies between them. That’s effectively a band-pass range. It’s useful for telephone, radio, distant-speaker and transition effects, or for isolating a noisy frequency window before more detailed processing.

For normal mixing, keep enough space between the filters to preserve the source’s role. Narrow both sides of every track and the mix turns small and disconnected. Build the arrangement first, then remove only what interferes with it.

## How to automate a filter sweep in Logic Pro

Channel EQ can automate an edge-filter frequency, but AutoFilter is often clearer for a deliberately moving effect. 1. Insert AutoFilter on the track or effect return.
2. Select HP or LP and choose a conservative Resonance value.
3. Press **A** to show automation.
4. Choose the plug-in’s Cutoff parameter from the automation parameter menu.
5. Add points before and after the transition, then shape the move to the music.
6. Listen through the loudest point and reduce resonance if the sweep whistles or jumps in level.

Very high AutoFilter resonance can reach self-oscillation, so protect speakers and ears while auditioning.

## Five mistakes that make filters sound worse

1. **Filtering every track by default.** Remove a real problem, not a color on the Analyzer.
2. **Choosing cutoff in silence.** A source can sound impressive solo and wrong against the arrangement.
3. **Using the steepest slope automatically.** Steep is a boundary choice, not a quality setting.
4. **Adding resonance without checking level.** The cutoff bump may create a peak even while other frequencies are reduced.
5. **Confusing filters with shelves.** A shelf raises or lowers a broad side of the spectrum; an edge filter keeps rolling toward attenuation.

## High-pass and low-pass troubleshooting

### The high-pass filter made the track thin

Lower the cutoff, use a gentler slope or reduce Q. Recheck the lowest musical note in context. If the unwanted low end overlaps the body of the source, you’re better off with a narrower bell, automation or source repair than pushing the high-pass higher.

### The low-pass filter made the track dull

Raise the cutoff or use a gentler slope. If only a narrow harsh area is wrong, replace the low-pass move with a bell or dynamic treatment so useful air remains.

### The meter peak rose after filtering

Check Q, resonance and phase-related waveform changes near cutoff. Cutting part of the spectrum doesn’t guarantee a lower sample peak. Compare at matched loudness and reduce output if needed.

### Should I use Channel EQ or Linear Phase EQ?

1. Choose high-pass to remove lows or low-pass to remove highs.
2. Set cutoff where the unwanted material begins, not at a memorized number.
3. Start with a moderate slope and restrained Q.
4. Back away as soon as the source loses its role.
5. Check bypassed, level-matched and inside the arrangement.
6. Automate only when movement serves the transition or sound design.
