# How to Use Arpeggiator in Logic Pro

## What the Arpeggiator actually does

An arpeggiator receives one note or a held chord and outputs a timed sequence of MIDI notes. It does not change the recorded audio. In Logic Pro it is a MIDI effect placed before the software instrument, so the same chord can drive a synth, sampler, electric piano, or any other instrument on that channel strip. This distinction explains a common surprise: recording while Arpeggiator is active usually records the chord you played. The repeated notes are being generated in real time by the plug-in. If you want those output notes in the Piano Roll, capture the arpeggio rather than assuming normal recording has printed it.

## Turn on Arpeggiator in either of two ways

### Quick route: Smart Controls

1. Select a software instrument track.
2. Press B to open Smart Controls.
3. Click the Arpeggiator button in the Smart Controls menu bar.
4. Hold a chord on a MIDI keyboard or play a MIDI region.
5. Choose a preset, Note Order, Rate, and Octave Range from the Arpeggiator menu.
6. Choose Open Arpeggiator when you need Latch, capture, velocity, note length, scale, or controller settings.

### Full route: MIDI FX slot

Open the Inspector or Mixer and click the space between the EQ graphic and the Instrument slot on the software instrument channel strip. Choose Arpeggiator from the MIDI plug-ins menu. This route makes the signal order obvious and lets you place other MIDI effects before or after it. MIDI effects run from top to bottom, so moving Chord Trigger above or below Arpeggiator changes what each plug-in receives.

## Build a pattern that supports the song

Rate is tempo-synced. Apple's current [note-order parameters](https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/logicpro/lgce129c3fbe/mac) list 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, dotted and triplet versions, and 1/32\. Start by matching the part to the drum subdivision. A 1/16 synth against a busy 1/16 hi-hat often creates density, not energy. Change one of them or leave deliberate gaps.

Direction determines the melodic contour. Up rises from the lowest held note, Down falls, Up/Down reverses direction, Outside-in alternates from the chord's edges, Random changes order, and As Played follows your trigger order. Variations and octave range can make a three-note chord sound completely different, but they also widen the part quickly. Check the lowest and highest generated notes against the bass and melody.

## Use Latch with a clear exit plan

Latch keeps the arpeggio running after you release the keys. It is useful for auditioning sounds, building a pattern step by step, and performing, but it also causes most stuck-pattern confusion. Know which mode is active before pressing the next chord.

Clear removes the contents of Latch memory. Delete Last removes the most recently added note, rest, or tie. ## Capture the sounding arpeggio as editable MIDI

The two capture buttons do different jobs. Drag the upper button to a software instrument track to copy the source notes you played. Drag the lower button to copy the arpeggiated output you are hearing. Logic places the result as a MIDI region at the drop position.

1. Loop a short section and let the arpeggio settle into the groove.
2. Open the full Arpeggiator plug-in.
3. Use Latch only if you need the pattern to continue while you drag.
4. Drag the lower capture button onto the instrument track at the intended bar.
5. Bypass Arpeggiator before playing the captured region, or the plug-in will arpeggiate those output notes again.
6. Open the Piano Roll and remove collisions, change velocities, and shape note lengths.

That bypass step prevents the familiar double-arpeggiation problem. Capturing also makes the arrangement easier to finish: you can mute one note before the chorus, lengthen a landing note, or simplify the second half without automating a complex live plug-in state. ## Make the part feel less mechanical

Change the harmony before adding random controls. A better inversion or one removed chord tone often fixes a stiff pattern faster than velocity randomization. Then adjust Note Length so the instrument envelope has room to speak, and use velocity range deliberately. With a pluck, a small length change can alter the perceived groove more than a new preset.

Input Snap in the Keyboard section controls when the first note enters the rhythmic grid; its default links to Rate. Root and Scale can constrain incoming notes to a chosen scale. That can prevent an accidental outside note, but it cannot decide whether the resulting line fits the chord progression. Listen through every change rather than treating scale correction as harmonic approval.

## Fix common Arpeggiator problems

### I hear the chord but no arpeggio

Confirm that the track is a software instrument track, the MIDI FX label is not bypassed, and the Arpeggiator Play button is on. If Logic is stopped, click Play inside Arpeggiator to start from its first step. Check that your MIDI region or keyboard is actually reaching the selected track.

### The pattern keeps playing

Turn Latch off or click Clear. If the problem remains, stop playback and use Logic's MIDI reset command for hanging notes, then confirm that no sustain pedal or remote-key command is still active.

### The captured region sounds twice as fast

Bypass or remove Arpeggiator after dragging the lower capture output to the track. Otherwise the captured individual notes pass through Arpeggiator again.

### The pattern starts late

Check Input Snap and the region start. A snap value can wait for the next division before the arpeggio begins. Also move the source chord exactly to the intended beat and check for unwanted notes just before it.

### The arpeggio clashes with the bass

Reduce Octave Range, remove the lowest chord tone, or move the instrument up an octave. Random order does not solve register masking. Make the pitch range intentional.
