# How to Use Quick Sampler in Logic Pro

**To use Quick Sampler in Logic Pro, create a Software Instrument track, open the Instrument slot, choose Quick Sampler, and drag one audio file into the waveform area.** Choose **Original** when the source is already prepared. Choose **Optimized** when you want Logic to analyse its tuning and loudness, crop silence, and look for useful loop points. Then pick **Classic** for a sound you hold and play across the keyboard, **One Shot** for a complete hit, or **Slice** for a loop you want to chop and rearrange.

Quick Sampler is built for one source at a time. That is its strength. A vocal phrase, field recording, kick, bass note, or drum loop can become a playable instrument without opening a large multisample editor. The important decisions are not hidden settings. They are how the file is loaded, which playback mode is active, and whether pitch changes should also change duration.

## Open Quick Sampler and load a sound

Choose **Track > New Software Instrument Track**. In the channel strip, click the Instrument slot, choose **Quick Sampler**, then click the plug-in name to open its window. Drag a file from Finder, Logic's File or Loop Browser, or an audio region from the Tracks area into the waveform display. The empty window gives you two drop zones. They are not quality settings:

For a drum hit you have already trimmed, Original is usually the clearer choice. For a pitched note or an unfamiliar loop, Optimized can save time, but listen rather than trusting every automatic marker. If Logic guesses the root note or loop badly, change it. The analysis is a starting point, not a verdict.

**A region is not the same as its source file:** when you drag a Logic region into Quick Sampler, Logic bounces that region offline first. Track plug-ins and processing can become part of the new sample. Drag the original audio file instead when you do not want the current track processing printed into it. ## Build your first playable Quick Sampler instrument

1. Create a Software Instrument track and load Quick Sampler in its Instrument slot.
2. Drag one audio file or audio region into **Original** or **Optimized**.
3. Choose **Classic**, **One Shot**, or **Slice** according to what the sound should do.
4. Drag the start and end markers so the useful sound begins immediately and unwanted tail is excluded.
5. Set the **Root Key** for pitched material, then use Tune only for the remaining correction.
6. Turn on **Flex** when you want different notes to keep the source duration. If tempo-aware material must also follow the project, enable **Follow Tempo** after Flex.
7. Adjust the amplitude envelope, filter, pitch, or modulation only after playback and tuning are correct.
8. Open Quick Sampler's Settings menu and choose **Save As** to keep the instrument setting. Save a Library patch when you also need the channel-strip setup.

## Choose Classic, One Shot, Slice, or Recorder

Classic is for playing a sample like an instrument. One Shot is for triggering the whole event without holding the note. Slice is for changing the order and rhythm inside a longer file. Recorder is the capture stage; after recording, switch to another mode when you want to edit the sample. ## Trim, tune, loop, and shape the sample

Move the start marker to the first part you actually want to hear. A few milliseconds of silence can make a drum feel late even when its MIDI note is on the grid. Move the end marker before unwanted noise or room tail. If the boundary clicks, make a small fade or move the marker to a cleaner part of the waveform instead of burying the click under effects.

For pitched material, set Root Key to the note represented by the original sample. Quick Sampler uses C3 by default. Without Flex, notes below the root play lower and more slowly; notes above it play higher and more quickly. That tape-like relationship may be exactly what you want. If it is not, turn on Flex.

Classic and One Shot also have a playback-direction control. Switch it to reverse when the complete Quick Sampler source should run backward between its start and end markers; Classic can include reversed loop playback. Classic mode can loop between the loop markers. Find a stable section after the attack, keep the loop shorter than the musical phrase, and use the loop fade to soften the join. Do not try to rescue a wildly changing source with a tiny loop. A steadier portion of the sample will give the crossfade less work to do.

## Flex vs Follow Tempo

**Flex** separates pitch from duration, so a higher note does not automatically become much shorter and a lower note does not automatically become much longer. **Follow Tempo** synchronizes tempo-aware audio to the project, but it is available for this job only while Flex is active. The two controls solve related stages of the same timing problem.

- Turn on **Flex** for a vocal phrase, texture, or sustained note when keyboard pitch changes should keep a similar length.
- With Flex active, turn on **Follow Tempo** for a loop or region with tempo information when it should stay synchronized as the project tempo changes.
- Leave Flex off when the natural speed-and-pitch shift is part of the sound.

Apple notes that Flex works with files containing tempo information, including Apple Loops, track regions, bounced files, and audio analysed with Smart Tempo. If Follow Tempo produces an odd result, check the source's tempo information first. ## Slice a loop and turn it into MIDI

Switch to Slice and Quick Sampler analyses the file for transients. Each slice is mapped to a consecutive MIDI note from the start key. Play the notes to check whether kick, snare, hats, syllables, or other events begin cleanly. Move, add, or remove slice markers when the automatic detection splits a hit twice or misses a soft event.

Slice markers divide one loop into events that can be triggered and reordered from MIDI notes. Current interface from Apple's [Quick Sampler Slice mode guide](https://support.apple.com/en-qa/guide/logicpro/lgcp18515788/mac).

To create a MIDI region, drag from the lower part of the waveform to the Tracks area or a Live Loops cell. You can also choose **Copy MIDI Pattern** from the Action menu and paste it. Logic creates the original order as MIDI notes, which is useful because you can keep the timing, remove notes, repeat one slice, or write a completely different rhythm without cutting the audio region by hand.

If the slices should become separate drum pads with their own channels, choose **Create Drum Machine Designer Track** from the Action menu or the waveform's shortcut menu. ## Record directly into Quick Sampler

Choose Recorder, select an audio input, and decide how capture should start. **Start immediately** begins when you press Record. **Wait for signal to pass Threshold** arms the capture and begins when the incoming level crosses the threshold you set. You still have to press Record first. Use Monitor only when you can hear the input without creating feedback.

Press Record again to stop, then switch to Classic, One Shot, or Slice to edit and play the result. ## Save the sampler setting or the whole patch

Open Quick Sampler's Settings menu and choose **Save As** when you want to keep the instrument under a new filename. Choose **Save A Copy As** to write another named copy. Use **Save As Default** only when you genuinely want future Quick Sampler instruments to begin from that setup.

A Library patch is broader. It can preserve the instrument together with channel-strip plug-ins and routing. Open the Library and click Save when that complete setup is what you want to recall. ## When Quick Sampler is not enough

Stay in Quick Sampler when one file is the instrument: one hit, one note, one phrase, or one loop. Open the setting in Sampler when you need a more elaborate multisample instrument, deeper mapping, multiple zones, or a larger instrument-building workflow. Apple allows a Quick Sampler setting to open in Sampler, but a Sampler setting cannot be opened back in Quick Sampler. Save a copy before moving a working sound into a more complex edit.

Do not switch just because Sampler has more controls. If the job is to trim a kick, pitch a vocal, or rearrange one loop, the smaller interface keeps the important decisions visible.

## Fix common Quick Sampler problems

### The sample changes speed when I play a different note

That is normal pitch-linked playback with Flex off. Turn on Flex if you want notes at different pitches to retain approximately the same duration.

### The loop does not follow the project tempo

Turn on Follow Tempo and check whether the file has usable tempo information. Apple Loops and Logic regions are straightforward sources; other audio may need Smart Tempo analysis first.

### A drum hit stops when I release the key

Classic mode responds to how long the key is held. Switch to One Shot when the complete hit should continue to its end marker after one trigger.

### Slice mode cuts the loop in the wrong places

Adjust the transient sensitivity or edit the slice markers manually. Remove duplicate slices around one attack and add a marker where a quieter event was missed.

### The sample sounds late or clicks at the start

Move the start marker past unwanted silence. If the new boundary clicks, add a short fade or move the marker slightly to a cleaner waveform crossing.
