How to Change Tempo or BPM in Logic Pro

Set a new project BPM, build tempo changes and ramps, and control what happens to existing audio when the tempo moves.

To change the BPM of an entire Logic Pro project, show Beats & Project in the LCD, double-click the tempo number, type the new value, and press Return. That part takes seconds. The decision that matters is what should happen to audio already in the project: some regions should stretch with the new tempo, while others should keep their original speed.

This guide covers both jobs. You will set one BPM for the whole song, add a tempo change in the middle, draw a gradual ramp, and stop existing audio from moving or stretching when it should stay put. The routes below were checked against Apple's current Logic Pro for Mac tempo instructions.

Before you change a developed project: save it, then create a backup or Project Alternative. Write down which recordings must keep their natural timing. A tempo edit can be perfectly correct and still rearrange the song if the wrong regions are set to follow it.

Changing the project BPM and asking Smart Tempo to analyze a performance are related, but they are not the same task. Use the LCD or Tempo track when you already know the tempo you want. Use Smart Tempo when the recording should define the grid, or when imported audio needs analysis before it can follow the project cleanly.

How to change the BPM of the whole project

  1. Save the project and decide which existing audio should follow the new tempo.
  2. If the tempo is missing from the LCD, click the down arrow at the right side of the LCD and choose Beats & Project.
  3. Double-click the tempo number, type the BPM you want, and press Return. You can also click-hold the value and drag up or down.
  4. Play through the song. Listen to recorded audio, Apple Loops, Drummer or Session Player regions, and every edit point around a tempo-sensitive transition.

Apple documents a project-tempo range of 5–990 BPM. That range is wider than most musical work needs; entering the musical value directly is safer than making a long drag and landing a fraction away from the intended tempo.

What follows when you change the tempo?

MIDI regions follow the project tempo. A four-bar MIDI part remains four bars long, so its real-time playback becomes faster or slower when the BPM changes.

Audio is controlled separately. In the Region inspector, Flex & Follow: Off keeps an audio region from being Flex-enabled and stops it from following the project tempo. Settings such as On, Bars, or Beats allow the recording to follow the project in different ways. This is why two audio regions in the same project can react differently to one tempo edit.

Many Apple Loops and generated musical parts can respond to the project grid, so check them after a tempo edit. Listen instead of assuming that a region's bar length tells you whether the sound still feels natural.

Change tempo without stretching or moving existing audio

The search phrase “change tempo without affecting audio” hides two separate requirements:

  • Keep the audio's playback speed: set its Flex & Follow value to Off.
  • Keep the region at the same absolute time: use Functions > Lock SMPTE Position.

One setting does not replace the other. Flex & Follow controls whether audio conforms to the musical tempo. SMPTE locking controls whether the region keeps the same clock-time position when bars and beats move around it.

  1. Save a Project Alternative or a separate backup.
  2. Select the audio regions that must keep their original speed.
  3. In the Region inspector, set Flex & Follow to Off.
  4. If a region must remain at an exact timecode position, select it and choose Functions > Lock SMPTE Position.
  5. Change the project tempo.
  6. Inspect boundaries for new gaps, overlaps, and edits that no longer land on the intended beat.

Apple's SMPTE-position guide explains the absolute-time lock. Use it deliberately: a locked region will not move with later musical rearrangements until you unlock it.

How to change tempo in the middle of a song

Use the Tempo track when the song needs more than one speed. This is the clean route for a faster final chorus, a slower breakdown, or a hard tempo switch before an outro.

  1. Choose Track > Global Tracks > Show Global Tracks, or press G.
  2. If the Tempo track is hidden, Control-click the global tracks header and enable Tempo.
  3. Click the target bar in the Tempo track with the Pointer or Pencil tool to create a tempo point.
  4. Drag the point vertically to change its BPM. For an exact value while creating a point, Control-Option-Command-click the target position, type the BPM, and press Return.
  5. Drag the point left or right if its change begins at the wrong musical position.

Logic restricts a tempo point to vertical or horizontal movement at one time, which helps prevent an accidental change to both BPM and position. Hold Shift while dragging vertically when you need a finer adjustment. Apple's current tempo-point instructions also cover copying, smoothing, and deleting points.

Create a gradual tempo ramp

A hard tempo jump is right for some electronic arrangements. A ritardando, accelerando, or natural band-style transition usually needs a curve.

  1. Create a tempo point where the ramp begins and another where it ends.
  2. Select both points.
  3. Drag the curve corner near the second point above or below the connecting line.
  4. Move the curve node to make the change arrive earlier, later, or more evenly.
  5. Use the Tempo track's Tempo > Snap setting if you need to control the density of performed tempo changes.

For a short transition, zoom in and listen through the boundary with the metronome both on and off. A mathematically smooth line can still push the musical emphasis into the wrong place.

Tap a tempo instead of guessing the BPM

If you can feel the pulse but do not know its number, assign the Tap Tempo key command in Logic Pro's Key Commands window. Tap the assigned key steadily with the music. The first time you use it, Logic may ask you to enable Tap Tempo.

Tap several beats rather than two. Human taps vary, and a longer run gives you a more stable starting value. If the source is a live or rubato performance whose tempo moves over time, stop treating it as one fixed BPM and use the Smart Tempo workflow instead.

Fix common tempo-change problems

The audio suddenly sounds faster, slower, or stretched

Select the affected region and check Flex & Follow in the Region inspector. If the recording must keep its original playback speed, set it to Off. Do not disable Flex across the entire project blindly; another region may be intended to follow the grid.

A MIDI part changed speed

That is expected. MIDI follows the project tempo. If you wanted only an audio file to play faster or slower, changing the project BPM was the wrong level of control.

Flex & Follow protects playback behavior, not absolute placement. Undo, lock the region's SMPTE position, and repeat the tempo edit.

Only one section changes tempo

Open the Tempo track and look for an extra tempo point later in the project. A new point overrides the earlier value from its position onward.

The tempo value is missing from the LCD

Open the LCD display menu and choose Beats & Project. You can also use the Tempo List or Tempo track, but the LCD is faster for one constant value.

The detected tempo is exactly half or double what you expect

That is an analysis problem, not a basic BPM-entry problem. Check the downbeat and half/double-time interpretation in Smart Tempo.
