Quick Sampler puts the waveform, playback mode, pitch, filter, amplitude, envelopes, LFOs, and modulation matrix in one compact window. Drag in a source, trim it, set the root key, and play. Classic responds to how long you hold a note and can loop. One Shot plays the complete event after one trigger. Slice divides a phrase into events mapped to consecutive notes. Recorder captures an audio input directly.

It is the better first choice for:
- a kick, snare, impact, or other complete one-shot;
- a vocal word or phrase you want to repitch;
- one bass, synth, or found-sound note played across the keyboard;
- a drum loop or phrase you want to slice and reorder;
- a sound you want to record and play immediately.

Choose Sampler for zones, layers, groups, and outputs
Sampler treats each audio file as a zone. A zone can cover one key or a range of keys and a defined velocity range. Zones sit inside groups, which let you change related material together. That structure is how a set of piano notes becomes one playable piano, or soft and hard snare recordings respond differently to performance velocity.

Choose Sampler when you need:
- different recordings for different keyboard ranges;
- soft, medium, and hard velocity layers;
- round robin variations that alternate when the same note is repeated;
- groups that share mapping, filter, envelope, or output behavior;
- individual zone tuning, start, end, loop, pan, or level;
- multiple outputs for separate processing;
- more modulation sources, destinations, and routings;
- an existing EXS library, or a SoundFont2, DLS, or Gigasampler instrument.
Sampler can still load one file. The question is whether its zone and group structure solves a real problem. If the sound stays as one source across the keyboard, Quick Sampler is usually easier to read and revise.
The decisive difference is mapping
Quick Sampler maps one source across the keyboard, or maps slices taken from that same source. Sampler maps separate source files as zones. In the Key Mapping Editor, you can drag a zone across a note range and assign it to a velocity range. Multiple zones with the same root note can become velocity layers, so the sample changes as the player strikes harder.

Sampler's drag-and-drop import can accelerate that work. Chromatic mapping places samples on successive notes. Optimized mapping analyses pitched files, estimates root notes, and can create velocity layers when several files share a root. Automatic mapping is useful, but check every root note and velocity transition by ear before calling the instrument finished.
Sampler also owns the round robin job. Put alternate recordings in separate groups, add those groups to a round robin cycle, and repeated notes can step through the variations instead of triggering the same file every time. Sampler has four LFOs and up to twenty modulation routings, plus zone and group structure around them. Its deeper system matters when one performance control must affect several destinations, when groups need different behavior, or when the sample set acts more like a designed synthesizer or expressive acoustic instrument. More routings do not improve a sound by themselves. If you need one LFO on filter cutoff and velocity on amplitude, Quick Sampler already covers the job. Move to Sampler when you can name the missing mapping or modulation relationship.
Do they sound different?
There is no useful basis for saying Sampler automatically sounds better. If both instruments play the same file with equivalent start, end, tuning, level, filter, envelope, Flex, and output settings, the important differences are workflow and available control, not a prestige tier.
They can sound different after import because the settings are not equivalent. Optimized loading may change tuning, level, loop points, or silence trimming. Flex can separate pitch from playback duration. Envelopes, filters, and output gain can also differ. When comparing them, use the same source, bypass unnecessary processing, match level, and check playback markers before blaming the instrument.
Loops, tempo, and slicing
Both instruments can use Flex and Follow Tempo with suitable tempo-aware material. Quick Sampler makes the one-loop workflow easier to reach and adds a dedicated Slice mode. Sampler exposes Flex inside each Zone pane, which is more useful when several tempo-aware zones belong to one instrument. If one break needs transient slices that you can rearrange, use Quick Sampler. If many separate hits need keyboard and velocity mapping, use Sampler. Move a Quick Sampler sound into Sampler safely
You can replace Quick Sampler with Sampler on the instrument channel strip and transfer the current content. Sampler can also load saved Quick Sampler settings. The move is one-way: Apple warns that a Sampler setting cannot be opened in Quick Sampler.
- Save the working Quick Sampler setting or the project before changing instruments.
- Replace Quick Sampler with Sampler in the same Instrument slot, or open the saved Quick Sampler setting from Sampler.
- Confirm the sample, root note, tuning, playback markers, loop, Flex behavior, envelope, and output level.
- Add new zones or mapping only after the transferred sound plays correctly.
- Save the new Sampler instrument under a new name so the working Quick Sampler version remains easy to recover.
Do not convert merely to browse a larger interface. Convert when the next step is adding zones, layers, groups, outputs, or modulation that Quick Sampler does not provide.
