How to Pan Piano in Logic Pro Without Making the Mix Lopsided

To pan piano in Logic Pro without making the mix lopsided, first decide whether the source is mono or stereo. Keep a mono piano near the position its musical role needs. For a stereo piano, switch the channel strip from Balance to Stereo Pan before moving it, then narrow the width until the piano supports the lead, bass and drums without pulling the whole mix to one side.

Fast fix for a lopsided stereo piano: choose Stereo Pan, center the image, reduce its spread, compare in mono, then rebalance the arrangement around the vocal and bass before reaching for more widening.

Start with the piano you actually have

A mono piano recording is one signal. Its Pan control places that signal between the speakers. A stereo piano is two related channels that may already contain low-to-high keyboard spread, room reflections, microphone distance and a player or audience perspective. Moving a stereo channel with the wrong control can turn down one side rather than move the whole image.

Listen before touching the pan control:

  • Does the left channel contain more low keys, room or close microphone?
  • Does the right channel carry more high keys or a brighter microphone?
  • Is the apparent center aligned with the song, or already leaning?
  • Does the library reverse perspective when a preset changes?
  • Does the piano collapse cleanly to mono?

Do not assume every piano library places bass left and treble right. Player perspective, audience perspective, microphone wiring and software settings can reverse the image.

Pan, Balance and Stereo Pan are different

Apple's current panning guide draws the useful distinction:

  • Pan: places a mono signal left, center or right.
  • Balance: changes the relative output levels of an existing stereo signal. Turning left lowers the right channel; turning right lowers the left.
  • Stereo Pan: controls the position and spread of the stereo image.

If a stereo piano feels right internally but belongs slightly left of the vocal, Balance is a poor first tool. It can erase part of the piano's right-side information. Stereo Pan lets you narrow the image and move its center while keeping both sides present.

Before switching modes, store the original control position or duplicate the channel-strip setting. That gives you a fast route back to the library's intended stereo image after a comparison.

Choose Stereo Pan on the piano channel

  1. Open the Mixer.
  2. Control-click the stereo piano's Pan/Balance knob.
  3. Choose Stereo Pan.
  4. Drag the center of the control to place the image.
  5. Drag its width handles to narrow or widen the spread.
  6. Option-click to return the control to its default before comparing another idea.

Choose the piano's role before its width

Make the decision with the full arrangement playing. A piano that sounds impressive alone can occupy every gap needed by the vocal, guitars, cymbals and reverb.

Player perspective or audience perspective?

Player perspective commonly places low keys toward the player's left and high keys toward the right. Audience perspective may reverse that relationship, depending on where the listener is imagined. Neither is a mixing law.

Use the perspective that supports the record:

  • Keep the captured or sampled perspective when piano is the featured performance.
  • Reverse only when the arrangement or picture needs the opposite motion.
  • Check whether the instrument preset already has a perspective switch before adding another utility.
  • Do not make left-right keyboard realism more important than a centered song.

For video, a visible pianist gives you a spatial cue. For an audio-only pop mix, balance with the other parts is usually more useful than reconstructing a concert-seat position.

Fix a piano that already leans to one side

  1. Center Stereo Pan and listen to the piano in solo and in the mix.
  2. Check left and right channel meters. A real level difference may belong to the recording.
  3. Temporarily sum to mono. If the musical center returns, width or phase contributes to the lean.
  4. Narrow the Stereo Pan spread before moving the entire image.
  5. If one microphone is genuinely too loud, use Balance or channel-specific gain with a clear reason.
  6. Move the narrowed image only far enough to fit the arrangement.
  7. Recheck the loudest and sparsest sections. A fixed pan can feel wrong when other instruments drop out.

Do not correct a bright right side by automatically panning left. The brightness may be treble-key content, not a displaced acoustic center. EQ, performance register and pan solve different problems.

Use Direction Mixer when width changes by frequency

Insert Imaging > Direction Mixer on the stereo piano and set Input to LR for a normal left/right recording. Apple's Direction Mixer guide says Spread 1 is neutral, Spread 0 produces summed mono, and values above 1 extend the stereo base beyond the speakers.

A useful sequence is to narrow the full signal first. If the high notes then feel too small while the low end finally stays centered, enable Split mode and set a crossover by listening. Keep low spread restrained and allow more high spread. There's no universal crossover frequency, because voicing, microphone placement and arrangement change the problem.

Keep the arrangement balanced when parts enter and leave

A piano and guitar can feel balanced when both play, then the mix may lean when the guitar stops. Automation can solve that more naturally than compromising every section with one static pan.

  • Narrow or center the piano slightly in sparse verses.
  • Let it widen when the chorus adds counterweight on both sides.
  • Automate a supporting guitar, pad or backing vocal rather than forcing the piano to carry the entire stereo field.
  • Check transitions as well as steady-state loops.
  • Keep bass, kick, lead vocal and snare anchors stable unless the arrangement intentionally moves them.

Three complete piano-panning workflows

Solo piano

Begin with the source centered and at its recorded width. Choose the intended perspective, then listen for an acoustic center rather than expecting both meters to match exactly. Room reflections and microphone placement can create natural asymmetry. Narrow only when the image feels detached from the speakers, the center wanders with register, or mono loses important body. Keep reverb part of the same scene and check the sustain pedal tails, which often reveal phase or room imbalance more clearly than the attacks.

Vocal and piano

Anchor the lead vocal in the center. Put the piano in Stereo Pan mode and reduce width until the middle leaves room for lyrics without turning the instrument into a narrow point. If the singer and piano occupy similar midrange, solve level and register before pushing the piano far to one side. Check verses where only voice and piano play, then choruses where drums and backing vocals add counterweight. A width automation move between sections can be more natural than a permanent offset.

Piano inside a full band

Start narrower than the solo preset. Decide whether the piano is rhythmic support, a featured hook or background glue. For rhythmic support, place a compact image opposite the most consistent guitar or keyboard layer. Do not rely on an instrument that disappears for half the song as the only counterweight. Keep low piano information near the center when it reinforces bass and kick. Let upper notes or room information spread farther if they don't collide with guitars and cymbals.

After each workflow, lower the monitor level. A mix that stays centered quietly is usually more reliable than one whose balance depends on loud stereo excitement.

Place the piano and its reverb as one scene

A centered piano feeding a huge unbalanced reverb can still pull the mix sideways. Keep the reverb return visible in the decision:

  • Solo piano plus return, not the dry channel alone.
  • Check whether the reverb preset has an asymmetric early reflection pattern.
  • Narrow the return when the dry piano is already wide.
  • Use independent send pan only when the spatial design needs the send to leave from a different position.
  • Check the combined piano and reverb in mono.

Insert Metering > Correlation Meter after any width processing. Apple's current guide defines +1 as identical in-phase channels, 0 as the widest permissible divergence, and values below 0 as out-of-phase content that can cancel in mono.

Momentary movement is different from sustained negative correlation. Listen to the mono sum through the whole song. If piano body, attack or reverb disappears, reduce spread or repair the source before celebrating the stereo width.

Repeat the balance check on headphones and one-speaker mono, but do not redesign the mix for a single playback device. Headphones exaggerate hard left-right separation because each ear hears one channel without speaker crosstalk. Speakers reveal whether the image forms a stable center in the room. A phone or small mono speaker exposes cancellation and shows whether the piano still supports the harmony after its low and high sides are summed. The goal is a useful translation across all three, not identical apparent width.

There is no fixed side. A featured stereo piano is usually centered as an image. A supporting piano can sit slightly left or right after its width is reduced and the opposite side has a stable counterweight.

Should I use Stereo Pan or Balance for a stereo piano?

Use Stereo Pan when you want to move or narrow the complete stereo image. Use Balance only when the relative left-right level is itself the problem, because Balance lowers one side as it turns toward the other.

How wide should piano be in a mix?

Should low piano notes be left and high notes right?
