How to Use Step Sequencer in Logic Pro

The quickest way to open Step Sequencer in Logic Pro is to Control-click an empty part of a Software Instrument track and choose Create Pattern Region. Double-click the new region if the editor is not already open, select Step On/Off, and click cells in the grid. Press Space to hear the pattern with the project.

This guide uses Logic Pro for Mac and Apple's current menu names, checked on August 24, 2026. You will build one useful drum pattern, shape it without flattening the groove, add a small automation move, and convert it to a MIDI region when Piano Roll becomes the better editor.

Fast route: Software Instrument track > Control-click empty track space > Create Pattern Region > click steps > press Space.

When Step Sequencer is the right editor

Step Sequencer is built for repeating patterns that are easier to understand as rows and time steps. A row can trigger a drum kit piece, a pitched note, or an automation parameter. Each lit cell plays the row's assignment when playback reaches that step. That makes the grid especially readable for drums, percussion, repeating bass figures, short synth patterns, and stepped parameter movement.

Piano Roll is still the clearer choice for a played MIDI performance, long notes, chords, detailed overlaps, and free placement between grid lines. You do not have to commit to one editor. Start in Step Sequencer for the pattern, then convert the region to MIDI when note-level editing becomes easier. Build your first Step Sequencer pattern

  1. Create a Software Instrument track and load a drum kit or another instrument.
  2. Control-click an empty part of that track in the Tracks area and choose Create Pattern Region.
  3. Double-click the pattern region if needed, then choose Step Sequencer in the Editors area.
  4. Select Step On/Off and click cells to place the main hits.
  5. For a simple 4/4 drum pattern, use 16 steps at a /16 rate, then start with kick on steps 1 and 9, snare on 5 and 13, and closed hat on the odd-numbered steps.
  6. Choose Velocity/Value and pull supporting hits down until the accents are easy to hear.
  7. Add Note Repeat or Chance only to optional details, then extend the pattern region if the last steps do not play.
  8. When the grid stops helping, Control-click the pattern region and choose Convert > Convert to MIDI Region.

Read the grid before adding more notes

In the 16-step example, each column is a sixteenth note and the pattern covers one bar of 4/4. Kick on 1 and 9 lands on beats one and three. Snare on 5 and 13 lands on beats two and four. Hats on the odd-numbered steps create an eighth-note pulse. This is a clean practice pattern, not a rule for every genre.

Listen to the three rows together before adding percussion. If the snare feels late or the kick lacks movement, change the pattern itself. Another plugin will not solve a rhythmic decision. Once the core works, try one extra kick before the second snare or remove one hat before the loop turns around. One deliberate change teaches you more than filling every empty cell.

Shape the groove with edit modes

Select Velocity/Value, then drag vertically on active steps. Keep the main kick and snare easy to identify and pull secondary hats or ghost notes back. There is no universal velocity range that makes drums sound human. The useful test is whether the accents still make sense at a quiet listening level.

For timing feel, open the Step Sequencer inspector, select Pattern, set the Swing percentage, and choose whether it applies to eighth or sixteenth notes. Start close to the straight version and compare the backbeat, hats, and bass together. Swing is a timing choice, so do not use it to repair weak accents or an overcrowded pattern. Note Repeat retriggers a note within one step. It works well for a short hat roll or a small fill near the end of the pattern. Use it on one or two selected steps first. Repeats across an entire row usually replace the groove with a texture.

Chance controls whether a step plays on each pass. Keep the structural kick and backbeat dependable. Apply Chance to an extra percussion hit, a ghost note, or a decorative hat so the loop can vary without losing its pulse. Give one row its own movement

Each row can have its own step rate, playback direction, and rotation. This is useful when one sound should move differently from the rest of the pattern. You can keep the kick at /16, set a percussion row to a different rate, or rotate only the hats so the accents shift while the backbeat stays put.

Make one row-level change at a time and listen through several repeats. Different row lengths and rates can create an evolving cycle, but they can also make the downbeat hard to find. If the pattern no longer supports the song, return the structural rows to the same length and use the variation on a quieter part.

Two current tools worth using after the first loop

For a melodic pattern, Step Sequencer can follow the project's Chord Track or the chords stored in its region. The note rows then use chord degrees instead of fixed pitches, so the same pattern can follow a changing progression. The current Randomize controls can change the active edit mode for the whole pattern or one selected row. Probability is available for On/Off, Tie, and Skip; Offset and Range cover controls such as velocity, chance, note repeat, and step rate. Start with a narrow range on a supporting hat or percussion row, then undo it if the downbeat becomes harder to hear. Add one automation row

Step Sequencer can automate an instrument parameter, a plug-in parameter, a Smart Control, or a channel-strip control. The most reliable way to assign the target is Learn mode:

  1. Open the Add Row menu above the row headers and choose Learn.
  2. Move the parameter you want to automate, such as a filter cutoff or a channel pan control.
  3. Click Learn again when the new automation row appears.
  4. Activate all steps in the automation row, choose Velocity/Value, and drag vertically to set the movement.

Start with one audible sweep or one alternating movement. If every step has a different value, it becomes difficult to tell whether the automation improves the part. Apple's support article confirms the same Learn workflow and distinguishes Latch for abrupt changes from Slide for smooth transitions.

Why the last steps do not play

The pattern's musical length and the region's length are separate. Step Sequencer can contain more steps than the region has time to play. When the region ends first, Logic stops there, even if later cells remain visible in the grid.

Drag the right edge of the pattern region until it covers the whole pattern. If the region is longer than the pattern, the pattern repeats. Use the Pattern Length menu to add steps; when the complete pattern does not fit the grid, Logic divides it into pages. Use the Pattern Browser without losing your own version

Open the Pattern Browser when you want a factory starting point or need to save a pattern for another project. Choose Save Pattern from its Action menu to keep the notes and settings. Choose Save Template when you want the pattern, row, and step setup with an empty grid.

A factory pattern is a useful way to learn how velocity, repeats, and row settings interact. Load one, mute rows, and inspect the parts. For your own song, change the rhythm as well as the kit. Swapping sounds while leaving the pattern untouched gives you new timbre, not a new groove.

Convert the pattern to a MIDI region

Control-click the pattern region in the Tracks area and choose Convert > Convert to MIDI Region. The converted region opens in the Piano Roll, where note starts, lengths, overlaps, and individual velocities are easier to see. Apple's current pattern conversion instructions confirm that route.

Conversion is a good handoff, not a failure of the Step Sequencer workflow. Use the grid to find the pattern and the Logic Pro Piano Roll guide when the part needs more detailed MIDI editing. Keep a copy of the original pattern region on a muted track if you may want to return to its row settings later.

Quick fixes when Step Sequencer is not behaving

The Step Sequencer option is missing

Select a Software Instrument or External MIDI track. Step Sequencer is not the editor for a normal audio region. If the track is correct, create a Pattern Region first and reopen the Editors area.

A row plays the wrong sound

Check the assignment in the row header. With Drum Machine Designer, rows normally correspond to kit pieces. With another instrument, the row may trigger a pitched note. Reassign the row instead of moving every active step.

The pattern sounds rigid

Change the balance of strong and supporting velocities before adding random timing. Remove one repetitive hit, then add one controlled repeat or chance-based detail. The pulse should remain clear when the variation does not trigger.

The pattern is correct but the song still feels static

Duplicate the region, edit the copy, and use the variation at a section change. Remove a kick, change the last hat group, or rotate one quiet percussion row. Arrangement contrast is often more useful than more activity inside every loop.
