Use Track Protect when the sound should keep playing normally but you want to stop accidental recording or region edits. Use Freeze when the track is ready enough to render temporarily and you need to reduce its real-time processing load. Protect guards the arrangement. Freeze substitutes a rendered playback file for the original track processing.

The practical difference is intent. Protect tells Logic not to let you change the material. Freeze asks Logic to calculate the demanding part once and play that result until you unfreeze.

Apple's track-header controls guide confirms that the header can be customized. Hiding a button doesn't change the track's current protected or frozen state, so check the header before you assume a track is editable.

What Track Protect actually locks

Apple's current Protect tracks guide defines three blocked actions: you can't record on the protected track, edit its regions or create new regions on it. Click the padlock button once to protect the track and the lock turns green. Click it again when a revision is intentional.

Protect is useful earlier than many people expect:

  • Lock the keeper vocal comp before cleaning breaths on another lane.
  • Protect a printed sound effect before moving picture-sync material.
  • Lock a tempo-critical percussion edit while rearranging nearby sections.
  • Protect a reference or rough mix so a recording command cannot replace it.
  • Lock finished MIDI regions while auditioning patches elsewhere.

Protect isn't a plug-in preset lock, and it isn't a CPU tool. The instrument and effects still run in real time. If a synth patch is expensive to play, protection alone won't make the project lighter.

What Freeze actually renders

Apple's current Freeze guide says Logic bounces the track to a freeze file. That file plays in place of the temporarily deactivated original track and its processing. The control is most useful for demanding software instruments, Flex processing and complex effects when the part no longer needs constant editing.

Freeze doesn't make a final stem. Logic manages the temporary file as part of the freeze state. If another engineer needs an audio file, if you're archiving a project against future plug-in failure, or if you want to edit the rendered waveform, make a deliberate bounce or export.

A multi-output software instrument is an important exception: Apple's current Mac guide says Freeze is not available for it. Split or bounce the required outputs when that routing must be preserved.

Source Only vs Pre Fader

Select the track, open the Track inspector and choose the mode before starting playback:

  • Source Only: renders the source without the track's effect plug-ins. Use it when the instrument or Flex processing is the expensive part but you still need to adjust insert effects.
  • Pre Fader: includes the effect plug-ins. Use it when the instrument and insert chain are settled enough to render together.

The names describe the render boundary, not sound quality. Pre Fader doesn't mean the fader setting becomes permanent. It means the render reaches the point before the channel fader. Listen after freezing and compare at matched level — an overloaded system, a changed tail or an overlooked automation move can make a technical decision feel like a tone change.

Protect a finished edit without changing playback

  1. Finish the take selection, timing or region placement you want to keep.
  2. Click the Protect button in that track header.
  3. Try a harmless edit, such as selecting and nudging a region, to confirm the lock is active.
  4. Continue arranging or recording on other tracks.
  5. Unprotect only when you have identified the intended revision.

To protect every visible track, Command-click a Protect button. Apple also documents click-dragging vertically across multiple Protect buttons to change several tracks together. Use all-track protection carefully during active recording: the new destination track must remain available.

Protection is especially good for handoff sessions. A color convention can tell the next editor why a track is locked, while a track note can state what may still change. The padlock prevents the accident. The note preserves the decision.

Freeze a CPU-heavy track safely

  1. Save the project or create a project alternative before a large freeze pass.
  2. Confirm the part, patch, Flex edits and automation are playing correctly.
  3. Choose Source Only or Pre Fader in the Track inspector.
  4. Click the Freeze button. Blue indicates Source Only; green indicates Pre Fader in Apple's current Mac guide.
  5. Press Play so Logic creates the freeze file.
  6. Listen through the beginning, densest section and effect tails.
  7. Watch the performance meter or reproduce the overload section to verify the freeze solved the actual bottleneck.

What can you still change after freezing?

Don't assume every visible control is baked into the file. Apple's current guide says channel-strip controls such as track mute and solo remain available, while track content cannot be edited. The exact render boundary also depends on Freeze Mode.

A reliable rule is to test the intended adjustment rather than memorize an old-version list:

  • If the control changes the source, regions, instrument or rendered insert chain, unfreeze first.
  • If the control remains active after the render boundary, Logic may allow it.
  • If Logic shows a frozen-track warning, cancel, unfreeze, make the edit and freeze again.
  • After any tempo, routing or automation change, listen through the frozen track instead of assuming the cache remains correct.

Keep an unfrozen revision path. A freeze you can't reproduce because a third-party instrument disappeared isn't the same as an archived stem.

When using both makes sense

Protect and Freeze can serve the same track at different stages:

  1. Protect a keeper edit while the arrangement is still moving.
  2. Unprotect it for a deliberate revision.
  3. When the sound and processing become stable, freeze the track for CPU relief.
  4. Unfreeze for sound changes, then freeze the new revision again.
  5. Before delivery, create named stems or bounces and keep the project source.

This sequence separates four jobs that are often collapsed into one word, “lock”: editorial safety, processing relief, revision history and delivery. Logic uses different tools because those jobs have different failure modes.

Apple's Bounce in Place overview makes the core distinction: both Freeze and Bounce can save processing by rendering, but Freeze returns to the original track and automation more easily. Choose based on what must exist after the operation.

Four real session scenarios

Protect the comp before editing breaths, room tone and doubles on neighboring tracks. The lead vocal may still need normal plug-in playback, and CPU is not the problem. A padlock gives the edit a clear boundary without changing its sound or creating another file.

A heavy software instrument during mixing

Keep the MIDI and patch editable until the notes, articulation and sound are settled. Then choose Source Only if the instrument is the bottleneck and the mix effects still need work. Choose Pre Fader when both the instrument and its inserts are ready for temporary rendering. Confirm that the project plays through the overload point after the freeze.

A sync session with approved sound effects

Protect approved regions so an accidental ripple edit, drag or recording command can't alter their timing. Add a track note with the picture version and approval state. If the processing is also expensive, solve that separately with Freeze or a named printed stem. The approval record should never depend on a hidden button alone.

A project going to another producer

Don't send only a forest of protected and frozen states. Save a project alternative, consolidate the files, export critical software-instrument stems and leave readable track names. Protect can show what should not move. Freeze can make playback lighter. Neither explains the creative decision or guarantees the receiver owns the same plug-ins.

Verify that the chosen control solved the problem

A button click is not the end of the job. Verify the outcome that motivated it:

  • After Protect, attempt one non-destructive region move and cancel. Logic should block the change.
  • After Freeze, play the section that previously caused an overload and inspect the performance meter.
  • Compare the frozen and unfrozen sound at the same monitor level when the render boundary changes.
  • Reopen the project and confirm the intended tracks still show their states.
  • For delivery, open the exported stem outside Logic and check its start, end, channel format and tail.

This verification keeps the workflow honest. Protect is successful when the edit can't happen accidentally. Freeze is successful when the session becomes more stable without changing the intended playback. A bounce is successful when the resulting file is complete and portable.
