How to Use Live Loops in Logic Pro: Cells to Song

Build a playable grid, keep cells in time, record new ideas, and turn the best scene changes into a normal Logic Pro arrangement.

To use Live Loops in Logic Pro, open the Live Loops grid, place musical ideas in cells, group compatible cells into scene columns, and trigger those scenes while the project runs. Set Quantize Start to 1 Bar for an easy first session, then use Enable Performance Recording to capture the scene changes as ordinary regions in the Tracks area.

Fast first project: build three scenes called Verse, Chorus and Break; put one useful cell on each track in every scene; trigger the scenes in song order; record the performance to the Tracks area; finish the detailed edits there.

What Live Loops is and is not

Live Loops is Logic's nonlinear workspace. Instead of placing every idea left to right on a timeline, you store phrases in a grid and decide which combination plays next. A cell holds one musical idea. A horizontal row belongs to one Logic track. A vertical scene launches a group of cells together, so it can behave like a verse, chorus, breakdown or transition.

Apple's current Live Loops overview confirms that each row shares the routing and channel-strip settings of the adjacent track in the Tracks area. That's why a bass cell and a bass region can use the same instrument, effects and mixer channel.

Live Loops isn't the same thing as Apple Loops. Apple Loops are reusable audio and MIDI files. Live Loops is the grid where any compatible musical material can be played and combined. It can also work as a flexible Logic Pro looper, but out of the box it isn't a one-switch guitar loop pedal. Recording, launch timing and track activation still need to be set deliberately.

Learn the grid before you fill it

The one-cell-per-row rule prevents two cells from trying to use the same track at once. Trigger a new cell on the bass row and the previous bass cell stops at the chosen Quantize Start point. Cells on other rows can continue. This is what lets one scene replace only the musical parts that actually change.

Build your first Live Loops grid

  1. Open a new project and choose a Live Loops Starter Grid, or open the grid in an existing project with the Live Loops button above the workspace.
  2. Set the project tempo before filling the grid. You can revise it later, but a stable starting tempo makes recording and launch timing easier to judge.
  3. Choose 1 Bar from the grid's Quantize Start menu. This is a practical starting point, not a permanent requirement.
  4. Drag an Apple Loop, existing region or file into an empty cell. Logic can create the required track and row when you drag suitable material into the grid.
  5. Build one rhythm cell, one bass cell and one harmonic or melodic cell. Listen before adding more layers.
  6. Trigger each cell, then click the scene trigger below the column to hear the combination together.
  7. Duplicate the scene and change one or two cells. Name the scenes by function rather than leaving them as numbers.

Apple's current Live Loops quick-start guide documents both routes: open a pre-populated Starter Grid or drag a file, region or loop into the grid. Starter Grids are useful for learning the controls. An empty project is better for understanding which track owns each sound.

Don't try to complete a full production on the first pass. Three contrasting scenes are enough to test the workflow. If you need to program a beat from individual steps, build the Pattern Region with the Step Sequencer workflow, then use that pattern as a cell. And if you want to browse included phrases, stay in the separate Apple Loops workflow instead of searching the Live Loops grid for media.

Launch cells and scenes in time

Click the center of a cell to launch it. Click a scene trigger to launch the cells in that column. The selected items flash while they wait for the next Quantize Start boundary. Apple documents Return as the Trigger Live Loops key command for selected or queued cells. Space stops project playback immediately.

For a first arrangement, leave cells and scenes on Global so they follow the grid's Quantize Start value. One bar gives you time to request the change before the next measure. A shorter value feels faster but is easier to mistime. Cell End is useful when a replacement should wait for the playing loop to finish rather than follow a bar boundary.

Apple's current start and stop guide explains one option that needs care: Smart Pickup can make a slightly late trigger start immediately at the musically correct position, but it may skip the beginning of the cell. If downbeats keep disappearing, turn Smart Pickup off and trigger earlier before changing the audio.

Use trigger modes only when the musical job needs them

  • Start/Stop is the normal choice for scenes and repeating musical sections.
  • Momentary plays only while the control is held, which suits short effects or fills.
  • Retrigger restarts a playing cell from its beginning, useful for deliberate rhythmic resets.

Keep Start/Stop until you can name the reason for changing it. Trigger modes affect performance behavior. They don't fix a poorly edited loop.

Record audio or MIDI into a cell

Live Loops can hold ideas you record yourself as well as imported loops. The safe setup is the same as normal recording: select the correct track, input and monitoring path, record-enable the track, then record into an empty cell on that row.

  1. Create or select the audio or software-instrument track that should own the cell.
  2. For audio, choose the correct mono or stereo input and test monitoring. For MIDI, load the instrument and confirm the controller reaches the track.
  3. Record-enable the track.
  4. Move to an empty cell and start cell recording.
  5. Play through the intended cell length, then stop and listen against the other rows.
  6. Open the Cell Inspector or Cell Editor to correct start, loop start and length before recording more layers.

Apple's current cell-recording guide separates audio and software-instrument behavior and documents looped MIDI recording. Don't assume every pass should merge. Decide whether you need one clean phrase, a layered MIDI cell or separate alternatives before you record.

If input setup is the problem, fix the signal path outside Live Loops first. The general Logic Pro audio-recording guide covers inputs and monitoring, and the MIDI path belongs to the MIDI recording workflow. A grid can't repair an unselected interface input or a missing controller.

Edit the cell, not the whole grid

Select a cell and open the Cell Editor when the musical phrase itself needs work. Trim the start, set the loop start and loop length, correct MIDI notes, or turn looping off when the cell should play once. A crash, vocal pickup or transition may be better as a one-shot than as a repeating loop.

Keep cell length and loop length distinct. Cell length is the full container. Loop length is the part that repeats. Apple's cell loop-settings guide also allows an opening phrase before the repeating section. That's useful for a pickup, but it can make the cell harder to read if the start and loop markers were changed accidentally.

When imported audio drifts or lands badly against the project, first confirm that the file has reliable tempo information. Logic can analyze files without tempo metadata, but the result isn't guaranteed to match every performance. Turn scenes into a normal Logic arrangement

There are two sensible handoff methods. Drag or copy a cell or scene into the Tracks area when you've already decided the order. Use performance recording when the timing of your scene launches is part of the arrangement.

  1. Turn Cycle off.
  2. Place the Tracks-area playhead where the arrangement should begin.
  3. Click Enable Performance Recording at the upper-left of the grid.
  4. Press R.
  5. Launch scenes and individual cells in musical order.
  6. Stop, switch attention to the Tracks area, and edit the resulting regions like a normal project.

Apple's performance-recording guide confirms that played cells become regions in the Tracks area. It also documents the important boundary: you can't record into a cell while recording a Live Loops performance. You can record a normal audio or software-instrument track alongside the performance, but cell creation and performance capture are separate operations.

Once the regions exist, stop treating the grid as sacred. Move sections, shorten transitions, add automation and clean the ending in the Tracks area. The song-arrangement guide continues from that point.

Understand why a cell or region went silent

A Logic track can play its Live Loops cell or its region in the Tracks area, but not both at once. Apple states this directly in its grid and Tracks-area interaction guide. The Divider column shows which side is active for each track and lets you switch the track back to its regions.

This rule prevents duplicate playback, but it also causes the most confusing first-session symptom. The timeline looks full, the meter works, and yet a region is silent because a cell on the same track owns playback. Stop the cell or use the track activation control in the Divider column before you touch the channel strip.

Control Live Loops without living on the mouse

Start with the mouse or trackpad until the grid makes sense. Then use Logic Remote or a controller if it improves performance. Apple says Logic Remote can start, stop, queue and edit cells and scenes, record to cells, operate track controls, add Apple Loops and enable performance recording. Don't buy hardware to solve an unclear scene layout. Name scenes, color related material, keep one instrument role per row and rehearse the launch order first. A controller makes a good grid faster to play. It also makes a disorganized grid faster to get lost in.

Once the scene order works, capture it and finish the details in the Tracks area. Keep the grid as a sketchpad or performance surface, not a reason to postpone the arrangement.
