How to Quantize Audio and MIDI in Logic Pro
Fix distracting timing while keeping the phrasing, flams, controller moves, and phase relationships that make the performance work.
To quantize audio and MIDI in Logic Pro without flattening the performance, make four decisions before you touch a value: what needs correction, which rhythmic grid describes the part, how much movement is necessary, and whether the material is MIDI or audio. MIDI quantization repositions events for playback. Audio quantization uses Flex Time to stretch and compress recorded sound around detected transients. The two menus look similar. The risks are not.

A safe quantization workflow
- Duplicate the region or save a project alternative before broad timing changes.
- Listen with the arrangement and name the problem: late backbeats, inconsistent sixteenths, one rushed fill, or loose chord attacks.
- Choose the scope: a MIDI region, selected MIDI notes, one audio region, or a phase-locked audio group.
- Choose the smallest straight, triplet, swing, or mixed grid that the part intentionally plays.
- For audio, enable a suitable Flex mode and check the important transient markers first.
- Apply the Quantize or Time Quantize value to the narrowest useful selection.

- Toggle Quantize to Off or compare the duplicate. Keep the change only if the groove is clearer.
- Listen across the edit boundaries and once through the full section before moving on.
That order heads off the most common failure: choosing 1/16 at 100 percent because the notes look like sixteenths. The ear identifies the problem; the grid describes the intended rhythm; Strength controls the correction.
Choose the grid from the performance
Set the grid to the smallest intentional subdivision, not the shortest accidental note. If a bass part plays eighth notes, start at 1/8 even when one note was released early. A hi-hat pattern with intentional sixteenths needs 1/16. A shuffle or a triplet fill wants a triplet, swing, or mixed value instead of a straight grid.
Apple’s current Quantize parameter reference includes normal, triplet, swing, odd, and mixed grids. Mixed values combine straight and tuplet divisions, so they can preserve a passage that contains both. They also demand accurate playing, because Logic then has more plausible target points to choose from.

Don’t reach for a finer grid as a gentler correction. A 1/32 grid creates more target points; it doesn’t mean “less quantize.” Use Q-Strength for less movement.
Quantize a whole MIDI region

Select the MIDI region in the Tracks area, open the Region inspector, and choose a value from Quantize. Apple confirms that this MIDI region parameter is non-destructive: the original event positions stay stored, and setting Quantize back to Off recalls the original timing.
Region quantization works when the entire take shares one rhythmic language. It’s the wrong scope when only a fill, a pickup, or one chord needs repair. Smart is usually the better first comparison for played piano, strummed chords, drum flams, and controller-rich performances. It can tighten the phrase without stacking every chord tone on one tick. Classic is more predictable when you want a deliberately geometric result. Neither algorithm knows whether a rushed note is expressive or mistaken, so compare both against Off.
Quantize selected MIDI notes in the Piano Roll

- Double-click the MIDI region to open the Piano Roll.
- Select only the notes whose starts need correction.
- Choose a value from Time Quantize.
- Adjust Strength and Swing while listening in context.
- Set Time Quantize to Off to compare the stored original timing.

Quantize audio with Flex Time
Audio can’t move like a MIDI note without changing the waveform in time. Logic analyzes transients, creates quantize flex markers, and stretches or compresses material between timing anchors. So preparation matters more than the menu choice.
- Duplicate the audio region or preserve a project alternative.
- Enable Flex for the track and choose a Flex mode that suits the source.
- Inspect the important transient markers: missing attacks and false detections create bad moves.
- Select the audio region and choose a Quantize value in the Region inspector.

Algorithm choice follows the source. Use Q-Strength and Q-Range for selective correction

Q-Strength controls distance travelled toward the target grid. At 100 percent, an affected event reaches that target; at 0 percent, it stays where it was played. There is no universally “human” percentage. Raise Strength until the problem stops sounding like a mistake, then judge the result at section level instead of soloing one note.
Q-Range decides which events are eligible, based on their distance from the grid.
