To master a song in Logic Pro, first confirm the mix survives quiet listening, mono, section changes and reference comparison. Then create either a manual stock-plug-in chain or a Mastering Assistant candidate, level-match the result against the unmastered mix, measure the complete song, bounce an uncompressed file with Normalize off, and inspect that file outside the project.
A manual chain gives you direct control over each problem. Mastering Assistant gives you a fast, integrated analysis and an adjustable starting result. Neither route wins by default. The useful master is the one that improves translation without making the vocal harsher, the low end smaller, the transients duller or the stereo image less reliable.

Fast workflow: save a mastering alternative, disable accidental double limiting, choose a representative reference, diagnose the mix, add only the processors with a defined job, put loudness and true-peak metering last, make a second candidate with Mastering Assistant, compare at matched level, check the complete song and several playback systems, then bounce and re-import the final file for one last inspection.
Decide whether the mix is ready to master
Mastering works on the entire stereo picture. That makes it good for small global changes and bad at rescuing one isolated source. If a broad EQ cut fixes the vocal but removes the snare and guitars, the vocal needs a mix-stage repair. If the limiter reacts to one bass note and pulls down the whole chorus, control that note on the bass channel or bus.
Before adding a mastering processor, play the loudest section, the quietest section and every major transition. Lower the monitor level until the balance is barely audible. Fold the mix to mono. Check the opening and ending for clicks, clipped tails and accidental noise. Listen for:
- a lead element that disappears when the level is low;
- kick and bass notes that produce disproportionate peaks;
- harsh consonants, cymbals or guitars that become tiring across a full song;
- low-end or stereo information that collapses in mono;
- automation moves that make one section unexpectedly louder or darker;
- clipping on tracks, buses, Stereo Out or an already active output chain.
A mix doesn’t need a ritual amount of empty peak space if its output is clean and controllable, but it must leave the mastering route room to work without clipping. Do not unknowingly send a limited mix through another full loudness chain.
Choose the workflow by the job, not the mythology

The choice isn’t “human versus AI” or “free versus professional.” It’s a signal-processing and quality-control decision. A restrained manual chain can be faster than correcting an unsuitable automated result. Mastering Assistant can also reveal that your elaborate chain is doing more than the song needs.
Prepare a clean Logic Pro mastering project
You can master inside the mix project or import a stereo premaster into a new project. A separate project makes versioning, references, metering and accidental routing easier to see. Staying in the mix project makes source fixes immediate. Use whichever keeps the signal path unambiguous.
- Save a new Project Alternative or version. Never make the only copy of the mix your mastering experiment.
- Confirm the source. Use the approved mix, not an old bounce with different vocal or limiter settings.
- Match the project sample rate to the source. Changing a number does not restore information that was never captured.
- Route the premaster once to Stereo Out. Check for hidden sends, duplicate output paths and active mastering plug-ins.
- Import one or more relevant references. Route them so they bypass your mastering processors and turn them down for a fair comparison.
- Mark test sections. Include the loudest chorus, a sparse passage, a bass-heavy moment, the brightest moment and the song ending.
- Set up final meters after all audible processing. The meter must describe what will be bounced.
Reference tracks aren’t tonal templates to trace. They help you judge broad relationships: vocal position, low-end weight, transient density, brightness, depth and how loudness changes the apparent balance. Compare songs with a related aesthetic, and pull the reference level down so its commercial master doesn’t win simply because it’s louder.
Build a manual Logic Pro mastering chain
A useful manual chain isn’t a row of mandatory inserts. It’s a sequence of decisions. Start with every processor bypassed, identify one problem, choose the least destructive tool, match the output level, and keep it only if the full song improves.

1. Use EQ for broad tonal balance
Insert Channel EQ or Linear Phase EQ only when the mix has a repeatable tonal imbalance. Make a small move, bypass at matched loudness, and check several sections. A low shelf that helps one verse can overfeed the limiter in the chorus. A high-frequency cut that softens cymbals can also push the vocal behind the track.
Linear Phase EQ isn’t automatically the mastering choice. It changes the latency and transient behavior compared with a minimum-phase equalizer. Use the mode whose result is cleaner for the material rather than choosing by label. For narrow resonances that belong to one instrument or note, return to the mix instead of carving the complete stereo signal.
2. Add compression only for a defined movement problem
Logic Pro Compressor can shape macro movement, density and the relationship between peaks and sustained material. Start by asking what should become more stable: the chorus, the vocal-led body of the song, or occasional peaks. Then set Threshold, Ratio, Attack and Release while watching gain reduction and listening to the groove.
Fast timing can dull kick and snare attacks. Slow recovery can hold down the next phrase. Auto Gain can make the processed path louder and bias the decision, so use manual output matching while you work. If the compressor must move heavily on one bass note or one vocal syllable, repair that event in the mix.
3. Treat multiband processing as optional surgery
Logic’s Multipressor can split the signal into as many as four bands and process them independently. That makes it useful when a limited frequency region has a dynamic problem you can’t solve cleanly with static EQ or source automation. It also creates more thresholds, crossovers and gain relationships that can damage tone or movement.
Do not insert Multipressor just because a mastering template includes it. Bypass it first. If the song becomes clearer and more alive without it, leave it out. When only one band needs control, monitor the full result—not the soloed band—and confirm that the cure holds across every section.
4. Use Adaptive Limiter for peak control and final level
Place Adaptive Limiter after tone and dynamics processing, before the final meters. Apple’s Adaptive Limiter reference documents Gain, Out Ceiling, Lookahead and True Peak Detection. The plug-in can control peaks and raise perceived loudness, but it can also color the result. Enable true-peak detection when the delivery requires inter-sample peak control, then increase level while listening for softened transients, distortion, pumping, narrowed depth and low-end instability.
Don’t judge the limiter only in the loudest loop. A setting that survives the chorus may pull a quiet verse forward unnaturally or exaggerate noise in the outro. Listen to the complete song, and compare the limited path against a level-matched bypass.
5. Put loudness and true-peak metering last
Insert Logic’s Loudness Meter after the last audible processor. Apple’s Loudness Meter documentation covers momentary, short-term and integrated loudness plus loudness range. Integrated loudness needs a complete measurement run: reset the meter, start from the beginning, play through the entire program and record the final reading. A chorus loop can’t describe the integrated level of the song.
Use true peak alongside LUFS. Sample peaks alone can miss levels created between samples during reconstruction or encoding. Apple’s Digital Masters brief specifically warns that a PCM file without visible overs can still clip after encoding, which is why the final-file and codec check matters.
Run Mastering Assistant as a separate candidate
Do not place Mastering Assistant after a completed manual limiter chain and assume the combination is a fair comparison. Save a separate project alternative or bypass the manual chain, then add Mastering Assistant as the final Stereo Out effect. Apple’s current Mastering Assistant workflow says it can analyze the project and apply corrective EQ, loudness adjustment and stereo-spread changes.
- Start from the same approved mix used for the manual candidate.
- Remove accidental double processing but keep intentional mix-bus processing.
- Analyze the complete song or set locators around a representative section.
- Play every major section, not only the analyzed passage.
- Use Loudness Compensation with Bypass while judging processing.
- Reduce or change any suggested processing that harms tone, dynamics or mono compatibility.
- Reanalyze after meaningful mix changes.

Compare manual mastering and Mastering Assistant fairly
Louder processing usually sounds more impressive for a few seconds. That’s why a fair comparison needs level matching. Mastering Assistant provides Loudness Compensation for processed-versus-bypass checks. For separate manual and Assistant bounces, reduce the louder candidate for auditioning so the short-term or integrated loudness is close enough that tone, movement and translation—not level—drive the choice.

Use a repeatable listening order:
- Level-match. Do not compare the release levels yet.
- Switch blindly if possible. Hide filenames or ask another person to switch candidates.
- Check the same short sections. Listen to vocal tone, kick/bass separation, snare attack, cymbal edge, depth and stereo stability.
- Play the complete song. Confirm that the winning moments do not create fatigue or uneven transitions.
- Check mono and quiet playback. Important elements should remain intentional.
- Check several real devices. Use the monitoring you know, then headphones, a small speaker and another ordinary playback system.
- Restore delivery level and meter again. The comparison gain must not become an accidental export change.
The result may be the manual version, the Assistant version or a revised mix followed by a simpler master. Do not combine both candidates just because each one contains an attractive moment. Identify the useful change and rebuild it deliberately.
Set loudness without treating one LUFS number as law
Apple says the center position of Mastering Assistant’s Loudness control typically lands around −14 LUFS-I, a common reference for many streaming platforms. Apple’s current Mastering Assistant parameter guide also says strict adherence is not always the best approach and that suitable loudness varies with the mix and genre.
Spotify’s current loudness-normalization documentation describes standard playback at −14 dB LUFS and gives true-peak recommendations for its own encoding path. It applies normalization during playback rather than rewriting the uploaded master. It also documents different listener settings and exceptions such as the web player and some third-party devices. That’s strong evidence against treating one playback target as a universal production requirement.
Choose final level by combining:
- the song’s transient and dynamic needs;
- aesthetic comparison with relevant current releases;
- the distributor’s current delivery specification;
- integrated loudness across the complete song;
- true peak and encoded playback;
- whether added loudness damages tone, impact or depth.
If pushing level makes the kick smaller, the vocal sharper or the chorus flatter, the number isn’t an improvement. Preserve the better master and let playback normalization do its job where a service uses it.
Bounce the master with controlled settings
Open File → Bounce → Project or Section. Check the start and end points manually. Leave enough room for intentional release and reverb tails. Apple notes that Include Audio Tail can extend a bounce, but some mastering plug-ins add noise that makes the generated tail impractically long. Set the end range deliberately when that applies.
Use the exact distributor or client specification. For a common uncompressed stereo delivery candidate:
- choose Uncompressed and the requested WAVE or AIFF file type;
- use Interleaved for one stereo file unless split channels were requested;
- keep the project’s native sample rate unless the destination requires conversion;
- select the requested bit depth;
- set Normalize: Off so Logic does not add another peak-normalization step;
- apply dither only when reducing bit depth, and only once at the final reduction stage;
- use Realtime bounce when external instruments, hardware inserts or another real-time dependency requires it.
Apple’s current Uncompressed bounce reference lists AIFF, WAVE and CAF, bit depths through 32-bit float, and interleaved or split formats. Its project bounce guide documents Normalize Off, Overload Protection Only and On. Use Off for a master whose level you’ve already set and verified.
The Apple Digital Masters technology brief asks for a 24-bit source at the highest native sample rate appropriate to the project and explicitly warns against upsampling just to create a higher-resolution label. Other distributors may specify something different. Check the current destination requirement before delivery rather than reusing an old export preset.
Inspect the bounced file, not only the live project
Create a blank Logic project and import the final uncompressed bounce. Make sure it isn’t routed back through another mastering chain. Confirm the duration, channel format, sample rate and bit depth, then listen to the opening, loudest passage, transitions and final decay.
Reset Loudness Meter and measure the imported file from start to finish. Check true peak again. Create a high-quality encoded listening copy when the distribution path will use a lossy codec, then compare it with the uncompressed master for clipping, brittle high frequencies, smeared transients or an altered low end. Do not deliver the audition encode in place of the required master.
